Friday Khutba
Khutba: Night of Kadr
21. April 2022Dear Brothers and Sisters!
By the grace of Allah (swt), we have entered the last ten days of the blessed month of Ramadan. Hidden in one of the nights of these ten days, the “Night of Power” is mentioned in the Qur’an itself. Allah (swt) says in Surah Al-Qadr; “Indeed, We sent it [i.e., the Qur’ān] down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.” [1]
Dear Brothers and Sisters!
Rasulullah (saw) has said that; “Look for the Night of Power in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.”[2]. However, the hadith stating that it was the 27th night were widely accepted by most scholars. Of course, even though we will be performing the 27th night collectively in our mosques, we should still consider each of the last ten days as an opportunity to get closer to Allah (swt) with our prayers. According to what is reported from Aisha (ra), the Messenger of Allah (saw) used to pray more in the last ten days of Ramadan than in other days of Ramadan.[3] During this period, our Prophet (saw) would get up at night, wake the people of his household, and continue to worship sincerely.[4]
Dear Jama’ah!
Prophet Muhammad (saw), also gave the following good news about the night of power to his ummah.; “A person who spends the Night of Power in worship and obedience, believing in his virtue and holiness, and expecting his reward only from Allah, will have his past sins forgiven.”[5] It is up to us to attain this blessing. We must properly utilised these nights so that all our sins will be forgiven, except for the rights we have interfered of people. We should not miss this opportunity that Allah (swt) offers us.
Dear Brothers and Sisters!
It should not be forgotten that what makes this night, which is better than a thousand months, valuable is the Qur’an, which was sent as a guide to humanity. Our book has been sent to all humanity to ensure happiness both in this world and in the hereafter. Individuals and societies that embrace the principles set by the Qur’an will always flourish. It is not possible to find peace when one moves away from the principles and values that Allah (swt) has revealed. We should make the Sahih-Sunnah a determining factor in our lifestyle. It is not possible for the guides other than the Qur’an and the Sunnah to guide us to the right path. The most effective way for us to benefit from the Qur’an is to read it throughout our lives. We must understand what we read and be determined to live what we understand in all areas of life. The Qur’an is both a cure for our hearts and the only recipe for solving all the problems in the world.
May Allah (swt) make us one of his servants who perform the night of power properly and hold tightly to the Qur’an that was revealed on this night. Ameen!
