Islamic Community Concerned About Qur’an Burning in Sweden, Denmark
22. December 2023The recurrent Qur’an burning incidents in Sweden and Denmark and the ensuing discussions on the boundaries of free expression were discussed by Ali Mete, Secretary General of the Islamic Community Millî Görüş (IGMG).
“Burning books is not an expression of opinion; in fact, it reminds us of dark times. The Islamic Community calls on people to appreciate one another and exercise common sense.”
Ali Mete continued his words as follows:
“We are worried about the Qur’an burnings in Sweden and Denmark. There is no question that the sole purpose of these heinous acts is to provoke Muslims. We should not fall for these immature games. Without a doubt, the Qur’anic teaching is firmly ingrained in the hearts of believers and is unaffected by these provocations.
Freedom of expression is a value of great importance that must be fought for. It is one of the most important achievements of humanity. That said, it is not without boundaries in and of itself, and a balance must be struck in terms of the rights of individuals adversely affected by this incidence. This is especially true when, as in these instances, it is obvious that freedom of speech is being abused to propagate prejudice and hatred.
This attitude applies equally to the persecution of members of other religions and their holy books. Such provocations should be banned.”
