“Building Energy Act” Puts Mosques in Difficult Position
22. December 2023Ali Mete, Secretary General of the Islamic Community Millî Görüş (IGMG), made a statement regarding the Building Energy Act, (Grm. “Heizungsgesetz”) which is set to start soon.
“We welcome the Building Energy Act for its contribution to climate protection. However, we are concerned that implementing these measures may place some mosques in a financially challenging situation,” said Mete. He also added:
“As the Islamic Community Millî Görüş, we place great importance on protecting the environment and addressing climate change. In line with this commitment, we strive to make our mosques as environmentally friendly as possible. We advocate for the use of environmentally friendly alternatives in both the construction of new buildings and the renovation of existing ones.
This is why we welcome the Building Energy Act with open arms. However, some mosque associations express concern regarding their ability to handle the financial burden that may arise once the act comes into force. The majority of the mosques in Germany are registered associations. Their finances primarily rely on donations and membership fees. When developing legislation, it is essential that the Federal Government consider the potential burdens that citizens may face and strive to provide effective solutions to address these concerns. Muslims also have a strong desire to make their own contribution to climate protection. The numerous successful projects we have undertaken in the field of environmental protection serve as a testament to this. It would be unfortunate if the desire to contribute to climate protection were hampered by excessively burdensome regulations.”
