Prophet Isa (as) and His Universal Messages
19. December 2024Dear Brothers and Sisters!
Praise be to Allah, who created us out of nothing and granted us countless blessings, and peace and blessings be upon all the prophets and upon Prophet Muhammad (saw). Allah (swt) has sent prophets to guide societies from darkness into light and made them leaders for humanity. One of these blessed messengers is Prophet Isa [Jesus] (peace be upon him). He is a chosen servant of our Lord, a prophet who was born without a father by the will of Allah. The birth of Prophet Isa reminds humanity of Allah’s power and the wisdom in His creation. Allah (swt) says in the Qur’an: “The angels said, ‘O Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allah].’”[1] Like other prophets, Prophet Isa (as) called people to believe in Allah, to possess good morals and to live with justice. His message serves as guidance not only for the society in which he lived but for all of humanity.
Dear Jama’ah!
At the core of Prophet Isa’s message is the concept of tawhid (the oneness of Allah). Indeed, in the Qur’an, our guide, it is narrated that Prophet Isa called his people to worship Allah, saying: “Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is the straight path.”[2] Prophet Muhammad (saw) described Prophet Isa (as) as follows: “I am the closest to Jesus, the son of Mary, among all people. The prophets are paternal brothers; their mothers are different, but their religion is one.”[3]
Dear Brothers and Sisters!
Another universal message of Prophet Isa (as) is the establishment of justice. He warned people against wrongdoing and urged them to follow the commandments of Allah. In the Qur’an, it is conveyed through his words that he was firmly committed to Allah’s revelation: “I have come to confirm what was before me of the Torah and to make lawful for you some of what was forbidden to you.”[4] Prophet Isa (as) emphasised that justice is not merely a virtue but a command from Allah, and he advised never to remain silent in the face of injustice.
Dear Jama’ah!
Prophet Isa (as) reminded people that the world is temporary and that the true residence is the Hereafter. He advised avoiding worldly desires and performing deeds that bring people closer to Allah. As a matter of fact, he once asked his followers, “Why do you not engage in the most superior act of worship?” When they inquired, “What is the most virtuous act of worship?” he replied: “It is humility for the sake of Allah.”[5] From this, we learn that worship is not merely about outward forms; its true purpose is to connect the heart to Allah, to humble the self in His presence, and to attain an awareness of servitude.
Dear Brothers and Sisters!
The messages of Prophet Isa (as) are timeless and serve as a guide for humanity in every era. Understanding his teachings and reflecting these universal values in our lives will bring us peace in this world and salvation in the Hereafter. May Allah make us among those who live according to the teachings of prophets like Prophet Isa (as). May He grant us a life based on love, mercy and justice. May He make us among those who receive His mercy in both this world and the Hereafter.
