Concern about Increase in Attacks Against Muslims
22. December 2023Ali Mete, Secretary General of the Islamic Community Millî Görüş (IGMG), made a statement on the attacks against Muslims and talked about Islamophobia.
In response to a question from the Left Party in parliament, the German Federal Government provided data for the first half of 2023.
“The official information on Islamophobic attacks released by the Federal Government paints a different image. In reality, the threat level is far higher. The rate of illuminating such cases, however, is very low. Politics must find a solution to this,” Mete said, adding:
“Muslims and Muslim-owned organizations face anti-Muslim attacks every day. According to data provided by the Federal Government, there were 250 attacks in the first half of 2023, which is 100 more than there were in the same period last year. The actual number, however, is significantly greater because there are serious flaws in the data that are collected; even those attacks that are covered in the media are not counted.
The process of documenting Islamophobic attacks still has significant flaws, which have to be fixed. To make the appropriate decisions and get results, it is crucial to present accurate data. Failure to identify and statistically document these incidents is a problem, but if there is one thing that is worse, it is the speed with which these cases are resolved. Despite the increase in attacks, their illumination rate is frighteningly low.
As a result, the criminal law loses its deterrent power, and Millions of Muslims in Germany are less secure.
We reaffirm our plea for politicians to once more pay attention to the problem of anti-Muslim racism and take the necessary steps to make sure that Muslims in Germany feel safe in their daily lives. It is absolutely unacceptable for Muslims to be targeted in public places, have Molotov cocktails or stones thrown at them, or for mosques to receive threatening letters on a daily basis. Nobody should ever grow accustomed to these circumstances.”
